Keywords or topics are important in identifying studies and / or data objects of interest to users. The MDR emphasises the collection of keywords about studies, because data objects generated by those studies will tend to share the same keywords. Topics can also be listed for data objects, however, when those objects are relatively independent of the study – most obviously for a journal article.
In many cases the keywords or topics will be generated by the data object creators, and in that sense are free text. In others object creators or repositories are constrained to use particular controlled terminologies. In those cases it is useful to identify the terminology system used, as well as the term’s code within it, as it can make searching and filtering easier.
The controlled terminology systems in the MDR system are as follows.
