Identifier types

Both studies and data objects can have multiple IDs in the MDR system, and this look up table stores the various types of identifier that can be referenced. The obvious missing type is DOI (Digital Object Identifier). This has a special status for data objects, as it is the default object identifier and is seen as one of the core attributes of an object. It is therefore not included in a list of ‘other identifiers’ and is therefore not in the lists below.

The identifiers fall into three groups: those that are applicable to studies, those that are applicable to data objects, and those that are applicable to both, and these groups are reflected in the three different lists. The distinction is also made in the identifier_types table, which has an additional field (applies_to) indicating to which of these groups any identifier belongs.

Within the MDR system, identifiers are always qualified by the name (and if possible the id) of the organisation that allocated them. In many cases that organisation is fixed for a particular type of id. It may be that the table could usefully be extended to store the allocating organisation ids when appropriate.

Note that identifiers 33 through 38 were added recently to accommodate the ids referenced in PubMed data. The exact relationship between the three ‘publisher IDs’ needs to be clarified.
